Another week and more award success for Had-Fab. This week they won two of the Structural Steel Design Awards.

The Structural Steel Design Awards, supported by the British Constructional Steelwork Association and Tata Steel, set out “to recognise the high standards of structural and architectural design attainable in the use of steel and its potential in terms of efficiency, cost effictiveness, aesthetics and innovation”. The standard of entries to the 2011 awards was very high and reflect the high standards being achieved both in design and fabrication. Had-Fab winning awards like these shows that the work they do is of the highest standard.

Had-Fab won their awards for their work as the ‘Steelwork Contractor’ and ‘Main Contractor’ on the Exposure project.

The judges referred to Exposure as ‘a remarkable structural steelwork structure’ and credited the whole team for overcoming the challenges that such a complex design gave.

Had-Fab recently won a ‘GAGA’ award from the Galvanizers Association for the Exposure project which was completed in conjunction with Anthony Gormley.

The Galvanizers Association represents the hot dip galvanizing industry of the UK and the Galvanizers Association Galvanizing Awards (GAGAs) aim to give recognition to those who are pushing the boundaries of what is possible in terms of hot-dip galvanizing in this country. The awards span five categories, for areas spanning from architecture to sustainability.

Had-Fab won the ‘Galvanizing in Engineering’ category for Exposure. Galvanizing this 60-tonne, 26m high ‘crouching man’ figure was certainly no mean feat, providing the company with many logistical and physical challenges along the way, but none of which were outwith the capabilities of those working on the project.

Given the complexity of the sculpture, Had-Fab recognised that they would require a comprehensive 3D BIM software solution in order to ensure that the artistic concept could be realised. Having assessed all available solutions including their current 3D software, they decided that Tekla Structures offered the most complete package in terms of detailing capability and collaborative tools and purchased their first licence in late 2006.

Simon Harrison, Managing Director of Had-Fab, was under no illusion as to the difficulties that lay ahead. “When I first saw the project, it was apparent that there would be a number of challenges ahead if we took the job on. However, I was confident that the combination of our design and fabrication team, Tekla Structures, Steel Projects and Ficep would ensure the success of this high profile project. Four years down the line it is clear that my confidence has been well and truly justified.”
